New social media research infographics and data

Over the last week or so there has been another flurry of interesting new social media research published, often with the now seemingly obligatory infographic to illustrate it.

The first piece that caught my eye was the UK Social Media Census 2011 commissioned by PR and corporate communications specialists Lansons Communications and carried out by Opinium Research in March to coincide with the real UK census. Key research findings include:

  • 61% of UK adults use social media
  • Social media use by age ranges from 87% for under 20s and 20s to 28% for over 70s

One fact that was interesting for me is that contrary to popular belief social media usage is high even amongst older generations. Almost a third of over 70s (28%) and more than a third of over 60s (39%)represent a significant target market.

The second piece was the Web in 60 Seconds which simply visualises how much happens every minute such as 600+ new YouTube videos uploaded and 320+ new Twitter accounts created.

How little musicians earn online

How little musicians earn online

You've heard about the struggling musician. It's a tough business. How tough is it though? David McCandless of Information is Beautiful, looks at how much musicians make from major online outlets. Bubbles are sized by how many sales or plays a song must get before someone makes US monthly minimum wage.

Sales vs. Plays

To place sales and plays together seems unfair, as it makes the bottom three look really bad. For instance, label revenue on last.fm is actually much lower than what the artist makes per play. I imagine the sales business model is pretty different from that of streaming too, so there should be some kind of division there.

Let's not forget that artists usually have songs playing through most or all of the revenue streams, so it's not all bust. I'm not saying the splits are fair (really not my area to judge), but still, I'm just saying.

Don't like the bubbles? Grab the data to give it a go yourself.

Wonderfully clear infographic on how many CDs you need to sell, as Cds, as downloads and in streams to make the US monthly minimum wage.

I don’t come across Chinese artists that often so I was stoked to see these crazy illustrations by Zhou Fan. I’m in love with his style, these bizarre, ultra-detailed pieces and that fact that he uses neons like he does just makes these even better. It’s kind of like you took the styles of Geoff Darrow, Takashi Murakami and Yayoi Kusami and threw them all into the blender. Totally beautiful and crazy stuff, I would love to see these in person.
